Joke's home, designed by her husband's brother, architect Wouter Peeters, is distinguished by its open, expressive architecture, perfectly in tune with the family's warm, creative lifestyle.
“We were dreaming of a loft, but that wasn't feasible in Dessel. So we opted for an open house with raw materials: a concrete floor, exposed beams and an aluminum staircase, which is the central element of the house. Wooden slats above the mezzanine add a warm touch. This balance between raw and warm is reflected in our interior.”
Joke's love for colour runs deep. "My mother used to dress me in Oilily when I was little, so that passion for colour was ingrained in me from an early age," she laughs.
"I’m not someone who collects interior design books; I go by instinct. I find inspiration everywhere - on Pinterest, in museums, in paintings and photographs. The world is grey enough already, so let me brighten it up with a colourful home!"
"We love the mix of new and vintage pieces - a little armchair from my great-grandmother, an old skirting board repurposed as a bench, and yes, even a stone dog from a photoshoot!"
Joke and Bob were already familiar with Kewlox from the storage cabinets in Bob’s parents’ home. "That classic 'cardboard colour'! But when we discovered all the possibilities, we were impressed. We used the configurator to design our ideal cabinets - it was super intuitive and fun to do."
Joke and her husband Bob live with their daughters Colette, Léontine and Odile, aged 18, 16 and 12 respectively, and their faithful dog Jérôme. A photographer by trade, Joke shares with Bob the running of their HOUDVUUR catering business, which specializes in wood-fired cooking. Their lively interiors reflect their personalities: a vibrant mix of color, character and functionality.
Over the years, their home has adapted to the needs of their growing family.
"When the kids were little, our ground floor was one big play area. Toys disappeared into a massive storage unit. Now that the girls are older, we’ve made room for new furniture."
Last summer, their daughters each got their own custom-made Kewlox cabinet.
"They chose their own colours and materials. It’s amazing to see how their personalities shine through in their choices."
And Joke keeps experimenting. "I love rearranging little corners of our home. That’s the great thing about Kewlox - it’s so easy to move and recombine. A cabinet that used to be in the bedroom now has a new purpose in the living room for my ceramics. The possibilities are endless!"
